Help Us Move In Celebrates Silver 25th Anniversary

In September of 2000 Leah Wells and I, walked to Madison School to investigate how we could start a small program to demonstrate what the congregation could collectively do to help the homeless community in Thurston County as a part of FUMCO’S “Discover the Joy” stewardship campaign. In 2017 Help Us Move In (HUMI), became a 501 (c) 3 charity, that has since helped over 44,500 children nationally and locally to be Homeless No More.

That first year HUMI helped 37 children escape homelessness by raising $13,000 and with the support of FUMCO congregation, we continued to help local children. In 2016, we engaged the community to join our efforts. HUMI of Thurston County continues to provide HOMELESS NO MORE MATCHING CHALLENGE GRANTS to Thurston County service providers: Family Support Center, North Thurston Education Foundation, Family
Education Support Services, Together, ROOF, Children and Youth Services, Olympia Education Foundation. Collectively we have helped over 7,600 Thurston County children and their families with stable housing by raising more than $2,000,000.

HUMI’s unique matching model begins with a donation from members of this community, that is matched by HUMI, and the total is then matched by donors to our local service providers. It all begins each year when community members provide matching funds to help Thurston County Children to “Discover the Joy” of being HOMELESS NO MORE every year. A $75 donation provides stable housing for one Thurston County child; a $750 donation provides a home for 5 local FAMILIES.

If you would like to join with us in continuing to assist Thurston County Homeless Children, you may donate to the church, directed to HUMI, or send a donation to Help Us Move In, 2645 Chambers Lake Lane SE, Lacey 98503.

"I was so thankful to receive the $800 towards rent.  I just started a new job but then got Covid-19.  The loss of hours at work was devastating for me and my two children.  They are both in diapers and my car just broke down I didn't know what to do.  It was a true blessing to receive this rent help." — HUMI Assisted Family

“The relationship with HUMI has strengthened community partnerships with agencies such as Together, Family Support Center, and School Districts. By offering housing assistance through HUMI, this has opened the doors for us to be able to obtain additional housing funding, this match program allows us to increase exponentially the number of families and
children we can help out of or keep from homelessness. Our Kinship, Parent Child Assistance Program, and Parents for Parents programs have all had clients who are experiencing trying times and have had trouble maintaining housing for their children. Thanks to this partnership with HUMI, we were able to offer housing support to many of the families that were engaged in these other programs Family Education & Support Services offers.”
